ICN Update.

Friday night was horrible. A baby on my "pod" died. She was a previously healthy 2 month old--who was at home where she fell ill with vomiting and high fever. She came to the NICU at 11:30pm Thursday night-- by 9am Friday morning, she had no brain waves, increased swelling in the brain and on a ventilator to keep her alive. They diagnosed her with bacterial meningitis. It was horrible to see. Even worse, seeing her parents. Broke my heart. They looked like our age, and to even imagine that they had a healthy baby and then WHAM, taken away... ugh.
Just before shift change, my preceptor and I had a new admit. When they reported from transfer, they said the baby had Downs with some heart defects and a high temp, but otherwise stable. Stable my ass. This baby was working soooo hard to breathe-- his heart rate was in the 200's, respirations in the 120's and oxygen was low 70's. He was only on oxygen and had no IV access... which makes me wonder, how shitty of a hospital he was at previously... seriously,... to let him decline that far before transferring him. Ugh.

Hard day. Long day. Wake up call.

Wow! Laura that was a hard day! It must be hard to witness those rough cases and have to deal with all the emotions. Hang in there! Those babies are blessed to have you watching over them!

Laura, I'm sorry you had such a horrible day! It sounds really hard. I'm sure you did great despite the circumstances. Keep up the good work :)

L-town, Your job is so interesting! I bet that was way hard though. Its kind of hard for me to hear about it. I couldn't even imagine going this far and having issues when she is born. Lets not think about that!
